Acts OF PERCEPTION

This series arose from reflecting on the nature of space-time, particularly in regard to humans being. In considering the act of perceiving an illusion there must be one moment of perception recording the first state of the illusion, and a second moment of perception comprehending the second state of the illusion.
What I mean here is that when looking at the 'duck-rabbit' illusion for example, first the duck is seen, then the rabbit but seeing both simultaneously in one moment is highly irregular. The passage of a moment in comprehending an illusion takes a moment of time. This is one way that humans become witness to four dimensional space-time.

It is the job of artists to create, dishevel, expand, contract, compress, expunge, expand, pummel, distort and reform imagery on it's way to becoming an art work. In this process, several series of works were created, some boiling down to single images such as this one, where an act of perception has occurred beyond the frame. This act of perception has reduced the image to near abstraction, as a line was walked between photographic reality and extreme abstraction.

The duck rabbit illusion has been known for some time. The image at left is from Wikipedia, and is an illustration taken from the German humorous magazine Flegende-Blätter, published in a 1892 edition. There are several similar types of illusion.
